Outside of legitimate scheduling issues like planned vacations or childcare , not showing up makes it seem like you dont know youre part of a team - and thats not a promising thing to see in future leadership.Whether your companys events are painfully boring or youd just rather stay home to watch Netflix, remember that your presence matters. Dont skip company events unless you have an important conflict, and even then andrang it by your manager to let her know why you cant make it. If you get a reputation for skipping anything social, coworkers may hesitate to connect with you during business hours, too.Everyone is so busy today , and it feels like I hear, Ive got so much going on all the time, Kusznir says. When you tell people how busy you are every time they talk to you - even when its true - it feels like youre trying to play the victim or make a power play about your availability. Worst case, it can make it seem like youre trying to get out of taking on more projects, and that will follow you.Boycott the word Busy from your vocabulary. If you absolutely must express the fullness of you r calendar, try saying, This week has been crazy or Ive had such a rich and varied schedule this week Such a small tweak may not seem like a big deal, but it will have a positive impact on how people view you.In one situation, a very talented employee wore dark-colored clothing and was covered in pet hair, explains Kusznir. It got to the point that team members would put things in the extra chair in their cubicles so that she couldnt sit down and leave pet hair all over the chair.You should be well known for your work - not the work people need to do to clean up after you when you meet with them. Check yourself for all basic hygiene before you head into the office, whether that means skipping the extra spritz of Eau de parfum or stashing a lint roller in your glovebox.Todays employers accept more casual business wear than ever before, but dressing very casually all the time can harm your reputation, notes Kusznir. If youre happy where you are, by all means dress casually, but if youre looking to progress you need to dress in a way that allows management to easily visualize you in that new position.Looks arent everything, but they do impact how people view your sense of self-respect, experience and authority. If you want to be known as someone to be taken seriously, the phrase, Dress for the job you want, still applies.If youre complaining about management, people will often join in, says Kusznir. But if youre complaining about another employee , its going to get back to someone and come back to hurt you. If you want a promotion, you dont want to be known as someone who cant keep private information private.Whether youre known for trash-talking your meeting mates when the conference call is on mute, or you just like to chat at the water cooler, speaking negatively about your coworkers is one of the most thorough ways to dismantle your reputation. Instead, train yourself to only speak positively when in the presence of those you work with and save all of y our constructive criticism for face-to-face.Over the years my managers would throw out different chances to pitch in So-and-so is out sick, can you check her messages? or Can someone stay until 430 today?, says Kusznir. Employees who never volunteer for anything when help is needed - who always do the bare minimum - may be good enough to keep their jobs, but theyre not going to move up or be considered favorably when its time to assign raises .In a competitive job market, above-and-beyond is the new minimum. It may not be strictly required that you volunteer for different assignments or bothersome tasks, but your reputation depends on how frequently and how willingly you volunteer your time and resources.Of course, theres no hard-and-fast rule about having to be available for every kind of work when you have legitimate limitations We had an employee who, for childcare reasons, always had to leave work at 330pm sharp, shares Kusznir. Whenever someone called in sick and needed so meone to man the phone until 500pm, she could never do it. But whenever anything else came up, she was the first to jump on the chance to help as a way to make up for the fact that she had to leave early. Because of that, we thought very favorably of her, and, even though she never stayed late, we considered her a superstar employee.Often when employees are superstars, theyre used to being superstars, says Kusznir. They were superstar students, and superstars at other jobs - which means it can be hard for them to go through the process of making a mistake and accepting constructive criticism without taking it personally.Dont let yourself be known as someone who cant take criticism - that alone can limit your career advancement options in a flash. Accept that everyone makes mistakes and needs critiques at times. We can feel that if everything is not done just right then the whole endeavor is a failure. But, a bit of backsliding or procrastinating does not mean you have failed in your pursuit forever; it just means that you fell down a bit and need to get back up to where you need to be. That̢۪s it. Don̢۪t over-dramatize the little bumps and stumbles along the way. As long as you are committed to realigning your life with your goals you are headed in the right direction. Regardless of your long-term goal(s), you have committed to a course for many reasons. Get those reasons down on paper to remind yourself why you are chasing your goals in the first place. And keep track of the benefits of your pursuits. When you see what you have gained already it is easier to push forward so that you can see even more. When you are taking a long trip somewhere it is pretty smart thinking to plan your itinerary in as fine of detail as possible. You wouldn̢۪t fly to Europe on a whim without an idea of where you were going to stay and what you were going to do, would you? Such an excursion would be more inefficient, expensive, and much more stressful than a well-planned trip. The same holds true for your long-term goals; you have to know what you need to do before you need to do it. Keep a record of the daily tasks you need to complete to eventually realize your goals. One of the best motivators for reaching any objective is accountability. It is much easier to hit the metaphorical snooze button when you only answer to yourself. Tell someone about your goals and allow them to hold you accountable for your actions, or lack thereof. A supportive friend may be enough to keep you pushing ahead, but partnering with someone who has similar goals leads to a reciprocal relationship that equates to even greater accountability and commitment. It is never too late to re-commit to your long-term goals, be they career goals, health goals, or any goal that helps you live a healthier and happier life.

The recruiter may fill either permanent positions or temporary, project-based jobs. These recruiters will seek job candidates who have the specific skills the employer wants, such as programming skills or technical expertise. Usually, the recruiter is an independent contractor who finds prospective employees for client companies, rather than being an in-house employee. Duties IT recruiters may work on attracting applicants passively, or may actively reach out to some prospective employees individually, perhaps through schools or programming boot camps. In either case, once an individual expresses interest and enters the application process, recruiters screen the candidate for the client companys job requirements and qualifications, as well as checking to ensure a good fit with company culture. If the candidate passes the initial stage of assessment, the recruiter arranges interviews between the job candidate and key staff within the client company. After the decision is made to offer the position to the candidate, the recruiter explains the compensation package the company is offering and helps navigate any negotiation over salary and other benefits. The IT recruiter acts as a  liaison between the client company and the job candidates throughout the entire recruitment process and is compensated by the hiring employer either directly or indirectly. Recruiters who are not employees of the company itself, may either work for recruiting firms that are hired by client companies, in which case payment comes through the recruiting firm according to its own compensation policies, or they may be individual consultants who work on a contract basis directly with the company. Information technology recruiters work to fill both in-house and contract jobs. They may specialize in one type of position or type of candidate, or they might be generalists who can do it all. Most have acquired the technical expertise and knowledge to fully understand the nature of the jobs for which they are hiring. To evaluate an IT candidate properly, a recruiter needs his or her information technology skills. Qualifications A college education is a minimum requirement. Most IT recruiters have bachelors degrees, and a smaller percentage have masters degrees, although such advanced degrees are rarely required. What you major in isnt necessarily important, although a technical major, or at least related coursework, might give you an edge down the road. A LinkedIn survey found that the most common majors of recruiters, in general, fell somewhere in a spectrum from psychology to political science, to business. That same survey also found that most recruiters started in some other field and then switched to IT recruiting. Many started in sales, but other initial jobs included research, operations, and administrative positions.   The path from that first job to IT recruiting often involves picking up the necessary skills on the job in other fields or through personal interest. Many such skills are not technical. For example, soft skills are very important in recruiting, because you need to both read potential candidates for a good cultural fit and entice candidates to work for the company you represent. The most important soft skills include a strong social aptitude, the ability to communicate effectively, relationship building, and top-notch organization. But, as mentioned before you will need some level of technical knowledge in the area you are recruiting for so that you can talk the talk with job prospects, answer their questions, and determine whether their particular qualifications match what the employer is looking for. Does Word-of-Mouth Hiring Harm Diversity Does Word-of-Mouth Hiring Harm Diversity Research by Evolv has also shown that, during the first 200 days, referred workers are more productive due to them having a more realistic view of the job and better internal networks. The Evolv survey also showed that referred workers are 20 percent less likely to quit their jobs. Its no surprise then that more and more companies are starting to increase their dependence on word-of-mouth hiring/employee referrals â€" and of course this paradigm shift has been greatly assisted by social technologies. Yes, a New York Times piece shows that employee referrals now account for 45 percent of non entry-level placements at Ernst and Young, which is  up from 28 percent in 2010. The piece also cited a Federal Bank of New York study which revealed that referred candidates had a 40 percent better chance of being recruited than other candidates. It seems like we are entering a new age of highly efficient and effective referral based recruitment which will eventually banish all other more meritocratic forms of recruitment to the graveyard (or at least into the outer recesses of corporate dark space). But, this all sounds too good to be true, doesnt it? Well, your suspicions are right; all that glitters is not gold. While I am in no way going to launch a tirade on the evils of using employee referrals in the selection process, there are certain perils and pitfalls of this form of hiring that I wish to draw your attention to, in particular, the potential negative impact that employee referrals can have on your companys diversity agenda. For example, the Federal Bank of New York study mentioned above showed that 63.5 percent of employers referred applicants of the same sex and 71.5 percent favored the same race or ethnicity. So, the more that a company increases its dependency on referrals, the bigger the negative impact on its diversity agenda. We already know that there is a natural tendency for people to want to hire others who they like, share interests with and can be friends with, as shown in the study,  Hiring as Cultural Matching: The Case of Elite Professional Service Firms. This means that too high a dependency on employee referrals can mean that an  increasingly homogeneous stream of applicants will be entering the hiring process. In other words, heavily relaying upon employee referrals can lead to a monoculture. While monocultures may be great for social cohesion, they are bad for business. For example, a study of 14,000 leaders by Talent Innovations concluded that organizations need a balance of both male and female leaders if they are to be truly effective. Another study by the Credit Suisses Research Institute of 2,400 leaders between 2005 and 2011 showed that stocks with at least one woman on the board outperformed those with no women on the board by 26 percent. Another report by DiversityInc showed that over a 10-year period, the top 50 companies for Diversity outperformed the Nasdaq by 28 percent, the SP 500 by 25 percent and the Down Jones Industrial Average by 22 percent. So, 1) since monocultures have been shown to be- to some degree- detrimental to modern business and 2) since a side effect of employee referrals hiring is increasing homogeneity of the workforce, employers should strike a balance between employee referrals hiring and hiring on the open market. What is the right ratio? There isnt a specific number, but the rule of thumb from The New York Times article seemed to be to not go over the 50 percent mark for employee referrals hiring versus open market hiring.
